Having a Servant's Heart

Greetings sister saints around the world!

How's life in the Lord for you? Are you serving the Lord with your whole heart?

"And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, To keep the commandments of the Lord, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?"

Deuteronomy 10:12-13

I wanted to write a bit on this subject of serving others. Of course we serve God first by loving and obeying Him above all else. He also wants us to be of a serving heart.

We know what Titus 2 says that women are to be.

"The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."

Titus 2:3-5

So as keepers at home and also if she has a husband and children she will do a lot of serving. So a woman will want to be a good servant to others.

Also as wives too they are to submit to their husbands and this involves serving him in whatever is needed too.

Even if a woman needed to keep a job she would submit to those over her directing her in her job (just as men would too).

And as keepers at home we serve those in the home; whether that be husbands, children, elderly, or other people in the home or that we are to look after.

These widows that Paul was saying should be helped sound a lot like good servants to others.

"Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work."

1 Timothy 5:10

How are some ways that a godly woman would go about her helping work? Here are a few and I'm sure there are many more as well.

Not complaining

"Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;"

Philippians 2:14-15

Joyful

"Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice."

Philippians 4:4

Reliable

"The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil."

Proverbs 31:11

Diligent and hardworking

"She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness."

Proverbs 31:27

"And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing."

1 Thessalonians 4:11-12

Doing it unto the Lord first.

"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;"

Colossians 3:23

All of those are a few things that I am pondering and working on in my own life. Of course there are many more scriptures about each of them. And we all serve in different ways. As women we do have much to do in this role. Because also God created woman to be a helper for man, and in the body of Christ we are all to serve each other as well.

We can look to scripture for what it says about actual servants and how they were to behave to bring God glory. I think it's edifying and encouraging to us even if we don't have the exact situations as they did.

"Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;

Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;

With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:

Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free."

Ephesians 6:5-8

"Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things ; not answering again; Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things."

Titus 2:9-10

I particularly like that...adorning the doctrine of Christ, by their good behaviour.

I know we aren't that exact type of servant but still it's good to see God's way in that and we can use that also in the ways that we are to serve others.

Some women more than others are more in the places of servants. God has His people in different places for a time or for longer.

"Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called.

Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.

For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant.

Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.

Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God."

1 Corinthians 7:20-24

And we know about Mary and Martha. May we also in our serving not forget what is most important.

"Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.

But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her."

Luke 10:38-42

Let us keep a balance in our daily lives. Not be like Martha who was overly distracted and engrossed in it to the neglect of that which was more important. May we remember that we are to live for our Lord first, and study His Word to see what He wants from us and be about pleasing Him most.

We can look to our great Example in Christ.

"But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.

But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;

And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:

Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many."

Matthew 20:25-28

And we can also serve in the gospel and work of the Lord in appropriate ways for women.

"And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life."

Philippians 4:3

"For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister."

Hebrews 6:10

And a few of my many housekeeper jobs I was doing today.

I got a great deal of work done today...so I'm satisfied.

And a few bonus pics from my evening walk:-)

The end of the day...

And I saw lots of these bunnies...

"If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour."

John 12:26

Amen sisters. Let us strive to have a servant's heart for our Master and for others.

Love and peace,

...from a servant of the Lord.
