Gospel Bag Tutorial

Greetings sisters!

Today I wanted to share how I make my gospel bags!

You will want a lightish plain coloured cotton fabric and also some kind of lining fabric...whatever woven fabric you like. And you will need some iron on interfacing also.

You will need iron on heat transfer paper which you can buy online.

Here is one example...

Cut out two outside fabric pieces to these measurements...

Cut two lining fabrics in the same measurements...

Cut two strip of fabric for the handles (11cm/4.5" by 87cm/34")...

(I didn't have enough fabric to make them that wide here.)

Cut same size strips of interfacing for handles and iron on...

Then iron in half...

Then unfold and press each side into the middle...

Then fold over...

Sew together close to the edge on both sides of the handles...

Cut a 8cm/3" square out each bottom corner of all the lining and the outter fabric pieces...

Cut interfacing for the two lining pieces...

And iron on.

Put right sides of lining together and mark out 10cm/4" by 2cm/3/4" gap in the bottom. (This will be for turning the bag right side out later.)

Sew the sides together. And on either side of the marked out opening...

Stitch the squared corners together on the bag lining...

Now the next part really depends on your printer and the heat transfer paper you have so I won't talk about that much. I'm sure the paper came with instructions. It can be a bit tricky to figure out though.

This is my set up of a chopping board with some baking paper on it then a pillowcase...

Figure out what you want to write...

I won't go into the technicalities of this all as each set-up is different but just showing a few pictures of how I did it.

After the transfer is on, sew with right sides together on the sides and across the bottom...

Line up the side seams of the bag bottom and sew...

Position handles about 9cm/3.5" in from the sides...

(Make sure they aren't twisted.)

With right sides facing as shown, put the bag outter into the lining...

And stitch together at the top...

Pull the bag outter through the hole in the bottom of the lining.

Stitch the gap in the bottom of the lining closed...

Push the lining inside the bag...

And stitch around the top close to the edge to keep the lining in place...

And then you're done!

This fabric really is too dark to show the words the best and after spending an hour or so on technical difficulties I didn't want to spend a lot more time getting the words larger...but hope to be fixed next time! We learn things...and can share them with others:-)

This side didn't turn out quite as well...

But now I have this sewing tutorial here if it can help anyone and it will sure help me when I go to make my next bag!

Let us sisters be salt and light and ready to give an answer in the world!

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Mark 16:15
